PREMIERE: Destroy This Place’s ‘Animal Rites’ is full of slick, thick ’90s rock

Given how much time bands spend in the studio nowadays, it can be refreshing to hear a record made in less than a week that actually sounds awesome. Animal Rites, the new LP from Michigan rockers Destroy This Place, is definitely that album. Created in four days with producer Justin Pizzoferrato (Speedy Ortiz, Sonic Youth), the album bursts out with thick (and slick) ’90s rock riffs a la Superdrag, Urge Overkill and Jawbox, and dual vocals that are a little bit yelpy in the best possible way. Vocalist/guitarist Ryan Allen remarks:

“I think we were all sort of subconsciously summoning a time in music where the radio would actually play a five-minute song and nobody would blink an eye—Sabbath, Zeppelin, Queen… all of those bands weren’t afraid to stretch their limits with long, heavy songs, while simultaneously remaining melodic and accessible. Then we sort of balance out those grandiose moments with pure blasts of punk energy, adding brevity to things when it feels right.”

Destroy This Place’s Animal Rites will be released October 23 via Forge Again Records and can be pre-ordered here.
