John Nolan’s covers of Brand New’s “Limousine” and “Tommy Gun” are must-listens

John Nolan of Taking Back Sunday and Jesse Lacey of Brand New go back many, many years—all the way to their high school band, Gudmunder Bjornsen. So when Nolan used PledgeMusic to fund the recording of his new album, Sad Strange Beautiful Dream, and allowed people to order custom cover songs, a number of fans ordered Brand New tracks—and it should come as no surprise that Nolan hit them out of the park.

First up, we have Nolan’s cover of Brand New’s “Limousine” from 2006’s The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me. He takes the six-and-a-half-minute power-dirge and subdues it, relying on his breathy vocals and piano playing to move the song along:

But this wasn’t the only Brand New cover Nolan made—another fan had him cover “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t” from 2003’s Deja Entendu. His version is built on acoustic guitar and Rhodes piano, though it doesn’t lose any of the intensity of the original version. Check it out:

According to Nolan’s PledgeMusic page, these custom covers cost $200 a piece—but honestly, given their quality, they were totally worth the money. Could there be more out there that haven’t turned up yet? Let’s hope so!
