Boston-based hardcore musicians Defeater are streaming their new album Abandoned on Epitaph Records’ YouTube channel. This is the band’s fourth full-length and debut on current label Epitaph. Defeater has been known for their storytelling through concept albums and Abandoned isn’t any different. Abandoned was written and recorded after frontman Derek Archambault received a life-changing surgery, repairing hip damage he suffered from an injury. The album is focused around Archambault’s struggles with faith. Defeater has been telling the story of an unknown New Jersey family during troubling times in their lives and Archambault adds into their troubles with his profound lyrics. Abandoned isn’t a “heavy-handed polemic against religion,” according to the frontman. “I’m not trying to paint everyone as martyrs,” he continues. “It’s a way to use religion—as well as drugs, alcohol and even fleeting moments of love. This is my ending metaphor for life—it’s about how people constantly look for answers for their questions in all the wrong places.”
