PREMIERE: American Pinup’s sassy “Committed” is for all the optimistic cynics

If you’re looking for fame and fortune, there are far, far better avenues to take than that of a DIY punk band. Sure, occasionally someone climbs the ladder and cashes in with their integrity intact, but for every Rise Against, there are 10,000 more bands who grind it out through shitty day jobs, sketchy promoters and flaky (soon to be ex-)members, all in the pursuit of their passion and nothing else. White Plains, New York-based quartet American Pinup might not sell a million records any time soon, but their new EP, The Radio EP, isn’t attempting to be something it’s not—it’s sassy, punky rock songs that sound kinda like Gwen Stefani fronting the Gaslight Anthem. Today, we’re premiering the track “Committed,” which is about that struggle of passion vs. “real life.” Frontwoman Lauren West explains:

“I wrote ‘Committed’ when the band was on the brink of breaking up a while ago. We were in between drummers at the time and the question of whether or not we should keep the project going came up. That really throws your world off-kilter. So I was doing a lot of thinking about my somewhat obsessive sense of ambition, as a musician and otherwise, and ‘Committed’ was the end result of that reflection. Like a lot of my lyrics, it’s kind of cynical with a streak of optimism.”
