Former Black Flag vocalist Dez Cadena diagnosed with throat cancer

Some terrible news for the punk scene today: 54-year-old musician Dez Cadena has been diagnosed with throat cancer. He has completed his first batch of radiation treatments  A GoFundMe page has currently been started to help him pay his mounting medical bills; you can donate to that here. We at Substream wish Cadena the best with his recovery and hope to see him back onstage where he belongs soon.

Cadena is best known as legendary hardcore band Black Flag’s third singer, bridging the gap between Ron Reyes and Henry Rollins and most notably fronting the band for their Six Pack EP, a release widely acknowledged as being one of the cornerstones for hardcore punk. Hear it below:

Cadena later moved to rhythm guitar in Black Flag, playing on their classic album Damaged. In recent years, Cadena has been a member of both FLAG (the reconstituted Black Flag minus Greg Ginn) as well as the Jerry Only-led version of the Misfits, playing on numerous releases including 2011’s The Devil’s Rain.
