Someone analyzed every line on Four Year Strong’s new album to find out who sings more, Alan or Dan

One of the best things about Massachusetts popcore quartet Four Year Strong is their unique dual-vocals setup. Both Dan O’Connor and Alan Day share mic duties, resulting in some seriously memorable lyrical tradeoffs and surprisingly crisp harmonies and neat vocal layering. But have you ever wondered, dear reader, just who sings more in the band? Reddit user MajikToast did, so he decided to analyze Four Year Strong’s new, self-titled album—line by line, vocal by vocal. Seriously. He explains just how he did it:

“I copied the lyrics into Excel, listened to the song, then added 1 point to either Dan or Alan with each line… My initial hypothesis was that I felt Dan had more lines in their earlier albums and Alan has been gaining more lines in their recent work. Turns out, this album shows they’re pretty much dead even. Maybe I’m thinking Alan’s vocals are a bit sharper than Dan’s smoother voice, so Alan stands out on their shared lines.”

Because it’s important to show your work, here is his track-by-track breakdown of each song’s vocal splits and overlaps (click for a larger version):

So if you’re more of a Dan fan, “I Hold Myself In Contempt” is the track for you:

Now if Alan is more of your jam, check out “We All Float Down Here” stat:

Of course, if you don’t want to choose, there’s always “The Sound Of Your Heart,” which is almost a 50/50 split vocally:

If you doubt MajikToast’s expert analysis and wanna count for yourself, or you just need a reason to go nuts in the pit, go see FYS this fall with Defeater. Dates:
