Welcome to the Guest List, Substream’s new feature where we ask your favorite musicians to tell us about their favorite musicians.

Today’s installment: Ash frontman Tim Wheeler picks his all-time favorite songs by Northern Irish musicians.

DAVID HOLMES, “I Heard Wonders”

It’s great to hear David Holmes singing on this track. You can hear the Neu! influence in the music, it’s a really surging track.

CASHIER NO. 9, “Gold Star”

David Holmes produced this. Fantastic song, it should be massive.

Neil Hannon has so many amazing songs, this is my absolute favorite.

THE UNDERTONES, “Wednesday Week”

The Undertones’ first two albums are filled with glorious speeding punk-pop. “Wednesday Week” is a bit more down-tempo and it’s the unrequited love that gets me.

THEM, “Baby Please Don’t Go”

Northern Ireland’s greatest-ever artist is surely Van Morrison. This is a cover from his early band Them. I’m in a Them mood today.

THERAPY?, “Teethgrinder”

Therapy? were breaking big when we were starting Ash. They showed us that a band could break out of Northern Ireland in a big way and they have always been really supportive of us.

RUDI, “Big Time”

This song really fights it out with stuff from Undertones and Stiff Little Fingers for the best Northern Irish punk song. Massive tune.

The vocal is so searingly aggressive. Still startling now.

SNOW PATROL, “Chocolate”

We toured together quite a bit over the years and have had a lot of fun together. I’ve always particularly loved Gary’s lyrics.

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB, “Something Good Can Work”

Our guitar tech Jimmy pushed their singer Alex fully clothed into a backstage swimming pool in Spain and had to buy him a new phone. Great band, loads of great songs.

Ash’s new album, Kablammo!, comes out June 9—catch the band on tour:
