EXCLUSIVE: Citizen’s “Numb Yourself” is provocative, progressive and powerful

One listen to Citizen‘s new album, Everybody Is Going To Heaven, and it’s clear this Toledo, Ohio-based quintet aren’t content to repeat themselves. While their previous album, Youth, is beloved by many, the band want nothing more than to push boundaries—sonically, lyrically, emotionally—instead of doubling down on what earned them success and feeling hollow doing it. No track on the Will Yip-produced Everybody Is Going To Heaven shows this progression more than “Numb Yourself.” Its 6/8 groove is deceptively straightforward, with cleverly discordant guitar lines interweaving behind frontman Mat Kerekes’ obtuse confessions. Everybody Is Going To Heaven comes out June 23 on Run For Cover Records and can be pre-ordered here; you can also pre-order a copy of Substream #46 here for an in-depth look at the making of Citizen’s new album.
