Throwback Thursday: Watch Death Cab For Cutie’s original lineup play some rare tracks in 1999

Washington’s favorite sons, Death Cab For Cutie, released their eighth studio album, Kintsugi, last week to considerable critical acclaim as well as landing at No. 8 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. This was Death Cab’s final album with guitarist Chris Walla, which made us think back to the band’s original lineup of Walla, frontman Ben Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer and original drummer Nathan Good. That thought led us to this series of killer YouTube videos from a show at Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe on January 23, 1999 (which just so happened to be Harmer’s birthday) featuring the the OG DCFC crew playing songs from their first album, Something About Airplanes,  as well as a gorgeous cover of “Wait” by long-forgotten Boston band Secret Stars (who are totally worth digging into, as are their sister band Karate) and an early solo performance of “405,” a track that wouldn’t officially get released for another 14 months. Props to YouTuber Brian Bean for capturing this rare footage!
