Singer, guitarist, record label owner, and self-manager Pryti is seriously an independent spirit. Her upcoming debut album Tales of a Melancholic is laden with nuances of Deftones and Paramore, but unlike anything else out today. I was lucky enough to talk to her about what it is like being the boss of your own music, and the inspiration behind her emotional and beautiful new record.

Substream Magazine: For readers who aren’t as familiar, can you describe your sound in a few words?

Pryti: My sound is dark, anthemic, soulful and cinematic.

Substream Magazine: I’ve been really fascinated with Tales of a Melancholic for some time; it’s one of the more honest and soulful albums I’ve heard in a while. What was the inspiration behind it?

Pryti: Ah thank you so much. It was inspired by real life situations, some TV shows and stories in my head all mingled together. I always want to write songs that people relate to.

Substream Magazine: I’m impressed that in true DIY fashion, you wrote, performed and produced the album on your own, via Welcome to Pariahville. What was the writing and recording process like?

The writing and recording process was done over a couple years. I write all my songs and sometimes it can take a day or a couple years it really depends on the song. I was lucky to work with the talented producer Justin Hill who has produced all my songs. I write the basis of my songs beforehand then when I’m in the studio we record everything and I write the bass parts and the guitar riffs in the studio. I love recording it’s so much fun.

Substream Magazine: What made you decide to start Welcome to Pariahville?

Pryti: I have wanted to start my own business for a few years and I was wanting to be in charge of my career so it made sense to start my company. I knew what I wanted to accomplish and I’m not the type of person to wait around for someone to make it happen for me.

Substream Magazine: What is it like being your own manager, booking agent, and even record label?

Pryti: It’s exciting, fulfilling and stressful. I pretty much have a list in my head of things that I want do and accomplish and I keep going down the list. I’m constantly learning and researching. I’m very lucky I have awesome people to go to when I need some advice.

Substream Magazine: What’s next for you in the coming months?

Pryti: Hopefully I’ll be able to sort some gigs in the near future, more videos, more songwriting.

Substream Magazine: What was the most memorable live show you ever attended?

My most memorable live show was Slipknot when they headlined download festival a few years ago they know how to put on a live show.

Substream Magazine: What is your biggest pet peeve?

Pryti: I can’t stand it when people slurp oh it’s very annoying.

Substream Magazine: If you could go on tour with any artist or band, alive or dead, who would it be?

Pryti: Deftones they are just awesome.

Substream Magazine: What is your drink of choice?

Pryti: I love Appletiser.
