10 things we learned from the Airborne Toxic Event’s Reddit AMA

Los Angeles indie rockers the Airborne Toxic Event embarked on a lengthy Reddit AMA earlier today, tackling fan questions from the super-serious to the super-not-so-serious. We know Reddit can be a pretty difficult place to navigate sometimes, so we thought we’d whittle it down to the 10 most important nuggets of information we gleaned.

  1. The Airborne Toxic Event is both guitarist Steven Chen and violinist Anna Bulbrook’s first band.
  2. The band have put serious thought into releasing a covers EP of all ’90s songs.
  3. It took eight months and 20 drafts for frontman Mikel Jollett to write “Wishing Well.”
  4. The song “It Doesn’t Mean A Thing” was about Jollett’s parents’ “hippie-ass wedding.”
  5. According to Jollett, Bruce Springsteen, Jack White and Tom Petty are “American treasures.”
  6. Chen frequently gets mistaken for the actor who plays Glen on The Walking Dead, and he’s okay with it.
  7. Unreleased live favorite “Waves And Radiation” has finally seen the light of day on the band’s new rock album Songs Of God And Whiskey album under the new name “The Lines Of The Cars.”
  8. Jollett isn’t a fan of musical theater. In fact, it makes him “wish for nuclear holocaust.” Ouch!
  9. The frontman also isn’t a big fan of poetry.
  10. Those female backing vocals on “Time To Be A Man” actually aren’t female at all—they were sung by a man named Kenny Soto, who has also contributed to a few other TATE songs.
