10 things we learned from Murder By Death’s Reddit AMA

Murder By Death

Midwestern indie rockers Murder By Death embarked on a lengthy Reddit AMA yesterday, tackling fan questions from the super-serious to the super-not-so-serious. We know Reddit can be a pretty difficult place to navigate sometimes, so we thought we’d whittle it down to the 10 most important nuggets of information we gleaned.

  1. The deer referenced in “No Oath, No Spell” was real–and the band unfortunately hit it with their van one night on tour
  2. Quentin Tarantino himself reportedly selected MBD’s song “Comin’ Home” for the Inglourious Basterds trailer, though unfortunately the band has yet to meet him.
  3. “Send Me Home” was written about frontman Adam Turla’s family, who have been dealing with loss in recent years.
  4. The band are huge readers, and some authors they all agree on are John Steinbeck, Cormac McCarthy and Ernest Hemingway.
  5. The word “shiola” was actually a made-up placeholder word in the melody Turla was writing but he ended up keeping it in the lyrics and naming the song after it.
  6. Adam Turla loves Pootie Tang. No comment.
  7. The band’s two favorite B-movies are Death Race 2000 and the Japanese film House.
  8. Turla’s memory of opening for Flogging Molly: “I have never seen a band sell more merch.”
  9. The first cover song MBD ever played was “Purple Rain.” Seriously.
  10. Even though the band still claim Bloomington, Indiana, as home, their members are currently scattered all over the country, including Louisville, Atlanta and Portland.
