INTERVIEW: Stars In Stereo talk NSFW Music Video and Upcoming Tours

A couple months back, Stars in Stereo released a music video for their single, “Leave Your Mark.” The video was deemed NSFW (not safe for work) and in return was censored before it could be released on YouTube. While in between tours with You Me At Six and Alien Ant Farm, Stars in Stereo has found the time to be able to release to uncensored version for fans. In order to release to video, they have posted it on their website. We got the chance to talk with singer Bec Hollcraft and guitarist Jordan McGraw about the re-release of the “Leave Your Mark” music video as well as their upcoming tours.

Substream Magazine: The censored video of “Leave Your Mark” was released 2 months ago, why release the uncensored version?
Bec Hollcraft: “We want people to see what it really is, and for a while we just weren’t able to release it anywhere, so it just took us some time to figure out how we want to go about that.”

SM:  Who wrote the song?
BH: “We write all of the songs together. We pretty much just sit in a room, and one person comes in with an idea and the rest of us build off of it.”

SM:  What is the meaning behind “Leave Your Mark?”
BH: “It’s got a lot of meaning. Mostly sexual liberation, but past that it’s about being able to feel comfortable in your desires and who you are and I think a lot of people are ashamed with that. It’s important to be able to find an outlet to express that and be okay with it.”

SM: Who’s idea was the video?
Jordan McGraw: “That was all of our sick, twisted collective minds. We sat around a table and picked our favorite fetishes. We come up with all our video ideas, which is the best part of being on our own label. We don’t have anyone telling us ‘this video needs to be this way’ or ‘you need to tone it down.’ We try to just push it as far as we can, and get our meaning across.”

SM: You are heading out on tour with Alien Ant Farm to finish up the year. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
JM: “We’ve never met them [Alien Ant Farm] before, but we have some mutual friends in Hoobastank and they said they are really awesome guys. It’s always a little weird on the first day of tour, it’s like the first day of school. I’m sure it will be just as fun as previous tours.”
BH: “We are also visiting towns we’ve never been to before, so that’s cool. We try to tour as much as possible, so when we get to go to towns we’ve never been to it’s exciting.”
JM: “We are revisiting some places we haven’t been to in a while. People always think we neglect them on purpose, but we don’t always do the tour routing, so we just have to go where the tour is going. It’s always nice to go to places where people were bummed that the last tour didn’t go through and perform for them.”
Dates for the tour can be found here.

SM: Any tour plans for 2015?
JM: “We just announced that we are going on tour with Bush and Theory of a Deadman in late January and that’s going to be fucking awesome.”
