Check out “Double Or Nothing” here:
It’s been a long road for Alesana but over 10 years they’ve built a cult-like following in the ‘Alesana Army’ and the band says they can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done. They’re the reason Alesana are still growing. But the honesty, dedication, and will of the band members to create art for art’s sake can’t be overlooked.
Substream Magazine: If you could define the band in a statement, what would you say?
Shawn Milke: A band that has stood the test of time thanks to their humble devotion to one another and their art, Alesana creates their brand of rock and roll through the influences of literature and a wide variety of musical background.
SM: What’s the most important thing for you about creating music and why?
Milke: To stay true to the art and always place its quality at the forefront. If we do not respect ourselves and our music why would anyone else?
SM: For a lot of people music is catharsis what do you think it is about your music that people connect with?
Milke: The fact that we buy into what we are selling. The art and the music is always the number one priority, not fame or acceptance. When you are honest with yourselves I think other people are more likely to buy in and see the art through your lens.
SM: You call your fans the Alesana Army – what effect, if any, do they have on you guys?
Milke: Our Alesana Army are some of the most devoted and incredible fans in the world. We owe them a great deal in regards to our success.
SM: When you’re writing, are you ever aware that your music/lyrics will potentially touch thousands of people and does it hinder or inspire the writing?
Milke: Aware, maybe. But we try to keep those types of pressures out of the writing room and out of the studio. Again, I think as long as we create music and art that we truly believe in and are proud of then we will never let our fans down. The fact that we’ve been able to touch so many people throughout the world is an honor and a blessing.
SM: Lyrics are essentially your life out there for the world to critique or connect to. Whose lyrics have had the most affect on you and why?
Milke: I’ve been a huge Ben Folds fan for years. His ability to craft a story through song is unmatched by most.
SM: The Decade EP celebrates your 10th year – as band how have you grown musically and lyrically?
Milke: I think as life grows, you automatically grow as a musician and a lyricist. The quest is never to repeat but to constantly mature and challenge yourself.
SM: Surviving 10 years in an environment where there are new bands every week is no small no feat. How do you stay relevant and continue to grow your fan base?
Milke: We owe any relevance to our fans. Alesana still going strong after 10 years is one of my proudest achievements. I work with some of the greatest musicians and people every day and for that, I am very grateful.
SM: Some of you have side projects – what does having other musical outlets allow them to bring to Alesana records?
Milke: Having side projects allows us to just expose some other types of creativity through different styles and genres. I can honestly say that the other projects really don’t alter anything in regards to Alesana. That is a bike we have been riding for sometime so it always comes very naturally.
SM: What’s your biggest fear?
Milke: Driving on bridges. Oh god, driving on bridges.
