Tour check in time! The start of summer signals festival season. Last week brought us Warped and this week, it’s MAYHEM! West coast Metalheads witnessed opening night of the 2013 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival in the sweltering afternoon heat of the San Bernadino Valley on Saturday June 29, 2013. Just minutes before previous players and Arizona deathmetal slaughterhouse Job For A Cowboy compelled sinners under their reign of Demonocracy via the Jagermiester stage; vocalist Jonny Davy shred some light on Mayhem Fest survival for first time bands and festies and how it feels to be back on one of the biggest metal tours of the season!

Substream Magazine: Welcome back to Mayhem!

Jonny Davy: Thanks! We played Mayhem for the first time in 2009 the year that Marylin Manson and Slayer played. It’s great and strange to be back, I feel like I did four years ago!

SM: Since you all are no strangers to the tour, give the first timer bands some tips for Mayhem success and survival?!

JD: Come in and roll with it! Bring a lot of sunscreen obviously and make sure you go to catering early! Get used to porta-potties because sometimes that’s all you’ll get and not a whole lot showers. It’s not all glitz and glamour all the time, especially if you are a smaller band it’s a lot more punk rock!” Don’t be afraid of embarrassing moments; I’ve had a lot of them and so has everyone but that is honestly the better part of tour because it makes you better. And if we’re talking about advice, I also think one of the most important lessons to learn is that you need to be smart with your money while you’re on tour, be responsible.

SM:  A lot of touring is all about going with the grind of things and being flexible with situations per city.

JD:  Exactly, and if you can’t do that you’re going to get sick of touring in general very fast. It’s important to keep that punk rock attitude, this is something I’ve always pictured doing and it’s funny how fast the time goes, I’ve been touring for about 7 no, 8 years now…Whoa!!!

SM:  So last year JFAC gave us Demonocracy, of which songs will be heard live all summer on Mayhem, but what have you started on that may be in store for late 2013 or 2014?

JD: Yes, it’s getting towards the end our the cycle for Demonocracy so after this tour we have nothing planned except falling off the face of the earth to work on a new record! We’ve just started small pieces of the puzzle so it’s anywhere between 2% done to 20% done haha! Whenever the inspiration comes we just go for it and who knows what will scrap or go with once we hit the studio.

Before what’s coming next from the metal assault completely melts our brains into puddles of sonic condensation, experience the twisted growls and blustery rage of Job For A Cowboy live all summer long on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival! Signings at the merch tent every show day at 5:40!
