Atlantic recording group Portugal. The Man has released their new album, “EVIL FRIENDS.” The collection – produced by five-time GRAMMY® Award winner Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, The Black Keys, Sparklehorse) – is available now in stores and at all online retailers.
Portugal. The Man will celebrate the arrival of “EVIL FRIENDS” tomorrow night with an appearance on the June 5th installment of NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, set for 12:35/11:35C (check local listings). What’s more, the band’s recent performance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! can be viewed now at YouTube’s official Jimmy Kimmel Live Music Channel – the band’s new single, “Purple Yellow Red and Blue,” can be seen below, while a bonus live rendition of 2009’s breakthrough smash, “People Say,” is streaming at www.youtube.com/watch?v=dllMzQTnNxY.
“Purple Yellow Red and Blue” is but one of three new videos from “EVIL FRIENDS” currently streaming at Portugal. The Man’s official YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/portugalthemanband. The clips – which also include “Atomic Man” and the album’s stunning title track – see the band collaborating with directors That Go (Noel Paul & Stefan Moore), known for their work with Bat For Lashes and Röyksopp; photographer David Vincent Wolf (Sigur Rós); and cinematographer Michael Ragen (Spiritualized, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys).
Portugal. The Man recently embarked on a major North American headline tour, set to continue through a July 18th homecoming concert at Portland, Oregon’s Crystal Ballroom (see attached itinerary). In addition, the band will appear at a number of upcoming summer festivals, including The Governor’s Ball Music Festival on New York City’s Randall’s Island (slated for this Sunday, June 9th) and Manchester, Tennessee’s world famous Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (Saturday, June 15). The festival sets come hot on the heels of recent P.TM performances at such annual events as Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and the inaugural Boston Calling Music Festival.
Following the U.S. tour, P.TM will travel to festivals in Australia (Byron Bay’s Splendour In The Grass on July 26th) and Japan (Fuji Rock 2013 in Niigata Prefecture). In September, the band will embark on a European headline trek, with dates slated for the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom. October then sees P.TM traveling south of the border for a major Mexico City live date. For complete details and tour information, please visit www.portugaltheman.com/tour-dates.
“EVIL FRIENDS” – which follows 2011’s acclaimed “IN THE MOUNTAIN IN THE CLOUD” – sees Portugal. The Man pushing their distinctive brand of modern psychedelia to extraordinary new heights. With Danger Mouse at the helm, the Portland, Oregon-based band has created a collection that truly captures the remarkable scope and power of frontman John Gourley’s vision.
“EVIL FRIENDS” is quickly garnering critical acclaim from all corners. “Gourley’s songwriting is as distinct with modern nuance as it’s ever been,” said Filter, declaring P.TM to be “a talented young band with a preternaturally bold figurehead.” RollingStone.com hailed the set as P.TM’s “most accessible and radio-friendly material yet,” noting that “while still retaining Portugal’s characteristically varied sound – from the undulating synths of album opener “Plastic Soldiers” to the Jane’s Addiction-channeling punk title track – the hook-heavy material carries new mainstream appeal.” Vibe.com praised the album’s “groove-style bass and spell-inducing vocals,” with BlackbookMag.com singling out “Purple Yellow Red and Blue” as “a rollicking, late-night banger with a more than sinister undercurrent of sleaze.” Complex Media’s Pigeons & Planes summed it up, simply decreeing “EVIL FRIENDS” to be “one of the year’s best…it doesn’t get much better than this.”
In addition, P.TM recently joined forces with Danger Mouse and UK-based artist INSA for “All The Feels” presented by Tumblr Music, an audio-visual immersion at Los Angeles’ LAB ART Gallery. The show highlighted artwork by Gourley in his collaboration with graphic designer Austin Sellers as The Fantastic The. Art and images from the event can be viewed at portugaltheman.tumblr.com/allthefeels, and a time-lapse video created at the event can be seen now at http://youtu.be/qD4jFWux93s.
In other news, Gourley will be featured in a fashion editorial on innovative shopping destination Gilt.com. Modeling shoppable looks inspired by summer festival season, Gourley will also be honored as a “Man of Style” on Gilt MANual, with an exclusive profile featuring additional imagery. The sale goes live on Saturday, June 8th at noon ET and can accessed directly through www.gilt.com/portugal.
