Time is said to heal all wounds, but as we get older we learn that sometimes it doesn’t. When the pain doesn’t ease on its own, it’s up to us to make the choice to continue on and keep moving forward, even when we don’t know what’s ahead. With their new single and music video for “One Foot”, Walk the Moon urge the listener to take that first step and put one foot in front of the other, beginning a journey into the unknown.
The “One Foot” video opens to frontman Nicholas Petricca walking alone through the desert at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. As the band performs, Petricca and a mysterious woman connect with space, time, and each other. Filmed during the recent solar eclipse, there’s an epic and empowering spirit to the clip, as he sings, “Oh, through the wilderness/ You and I will walk into the emptiness.” “One Foot” is as infectious as “Shut Up and Dance” or “Different Colors”, and features a thumping, funk-inspired beat with its repeated call-to-action, “Oh, one foot in front of the other.”
“One Foot” comes as the first single from Walk the Moon’s fourth studio album. After the 2014 release of Talking Is Hard, the Cincinatti, Ohio natives were on top of the world, with sold-out shows across the globe and “Shut Up and Dance” reaching Number 2 on the Billboard Top 40 and being certified three times platinum. Then, in the middle of a heavy touring cycle, Petricca’s father passed away, causing the group to cancel several dates in the spring of 2016. That fall, he and his bandmates Kevin Ray (bass), Sean Waugaman (drums), and Eli Maiman (guitar) regrouped in Austin, Texas to begin work on the album.
If your heart is a mess right now, fear not (Petricca’s sure is, as he sings in the pre-chorus); Walk the Moon have faith that you can continue moving forward, as they sing, “I got your back if you got mine.” “One Foot” is a reminder that even when times are hard or the future seems bleak, you have the power to journey on.
