Earlier this year the news was flooded with reports that the world’s longest running circus would be coming to a close after years of declining ticket sales. This revelation shocked many in the the entertainment industry to their core as it revealed even the most popular acts can and almost certainly will be forgotten. If you traveled back in a time one-hundred years and told people the circus would eventually become a thing of the past they would think you crazy. They also wouldn’t believe in stereos, television, the internet, or any o the thousands of additional innovations that have come to pass over the last century.

You may never be able to experience the circus through the eyes of someone who has never experienced modern technology, but The Greatest Showman hopes to recreate elements of that time with a new musical that seems destined for Oscar contention. Hugh Jackman stars a P.T. Barnum, largely believed to be among the best promoters of all-time, and details his incredible journey through the wild world of entertainment. You can view the first trailer above.

The official synopsis for The Greatest Showman reads:

Inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

It’s unclear why movie musicals often work so hard to hide the fact they are musical in trailers, but that again seems to be the decision made with this film. But make no mistake: You will see Logan sing in this film.

The Greatest Showman opens on Christmas Day.
