InVogue Records‘ newest roster addition, Florida five-piece Makari, will be releasing a brand new five-track EP, titled Elegies, through the label on November 18 (pre-orders will be available soon). Today, we have the pleasure of streaming a new single from the effort, titled “Afterglow,” which you can listen to below.
Channeling the compositional makeup of genre favorites like Circa Survive, From Indian Lakes, and the now defunct HRVRD, Makari have honed a sound that’s familiar yet altogether refreshing in a homogeneous scene where entire releases become forgotten in less time than it takes to create them. Luckily for Makari, they’ve got a similar spark in their sound to that found on the earliest releases of the aforementioned bands—ones that over the years have evolved into genre classics and fan favorites.
When asked about the themes within their newest single, Makari offered, “‘Afterglow’ is about the death of romantic feelings for someone. It is about the cessation of that honeymoon period in relationships where everything is exciting and beautiful and eager. The song is an account of falling out of love with the light we recognize in others, the light we endlessly pursue. The song is an exploration into the difficulties of being depressed and trying to have meaningful romantic relationships—how you can sabotage yourself, become numb, and be quick to dismiss feelings out of fear of being hurt.”
