Any theater person knows the joys and the hardships of musicals. They’re a ton of hard work, long hours, and sore feet from all that choreography, but when they come together it’s something truly special and fun. It’s not often that a movie musical can capture that same feeling, but the first teaser for the upcoming La La Land certainly shows promise.
The film reunites Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who previously have co-starred in Crazy Stupid Love (good movie!) and Gangster Squad (let’s not talk about that movie!). The pair star as actress Mia and musician Sebastian, respectively, both of whom are trying to find their way to stardom in Los Angeles. The teaser features Gosling singing a slow, jazzy tune called “City of Stars” over footage of the film, and he sounds pretty dang good. The film feels like a love letter to the mid-20th century when movie musicals were a staple of cinema—especially the moment where the silhouettes of Stone and Gosling literally go dancing through the stars. The movie is being directed by Damien Chazelle of Whiplash fame, and also stars John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, Callie Hernandez, Sonoya Mizuno, Jessica Rothe, Tom Everett Scott, and Josh Pence. With that cast and that director, it’s safe to say La La Land is in good hands.
Watch the teaser below, and mark your calendars for December when the movie lands. If you want more of that sweet Ryan Gosling crooning, “City of Stars” is also available for purchase through iTunes.
