The world has lost one of the last true comedy auteurs. Garry Marshall, director of Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries, among many other films, has died at the age of 81.
Access Hollywood broke the story. Marshall, whose last film Mother’s Day was released in May, passed away sometime on Tuesday, July 19. According to his publicist, Michelle Bega, Marshall died from complications of pneumonia following a stroke at a hospital.
A New York City native, Marshall had directed, produced and starred in films and TV shows since the late 1950s. He created Mork And Mindy and helped make Julia Roberts a household name. Critics were not always kind to Marshall, but he clung tightly to the traits that made him unique and always found a path to tell the stories he wanted to tell.
2016 has not been easy on our hearts. Rest easy, Garry. You will be missed.
