Netflix seems to be unstoppable right now. They’ve spent the summer releasing both fantastic new series like Stranger Things and new seasons of their established shows like the third season of Bojack Horseman. In a couple of weeks we’ll have another show to add to that list, as Netflix released the trailer for The Get Down today, and it looks absolutely stunning.
The Get Down is set in South Bronx in 1977, during the infamous “the Bronx is burning” time when the area was wracked by rampant poverty and arson. In the middle of all of this was a revolution in music, as disco was prominent and the birth of hip-hop was rapidly approaching. It’s against this backdrop that The Get Down is set. The show looks to navigate both the musical and personal lives of those living in the time frame, especially those of Ezekiel Figuero (Justice Smith) and Mylene Cruz (Herizen Guardiola) as they pursue both their dreams in hip-hop and disco and their feelings for each other. The rest of the excellent cast is rounded out by Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks, Jaden Smith, Giancarlo Esposito, and Jimmy Smits. The show also boasts an amazing crew behind the camera, with Baz Luherman, Catherine Martin, and Nas all executive producing.
The Get Down is headed to Netflix on August 12. Check out the new trailer below.
