M. Night Shyamalan is capable of creating some tense masterpieces (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) and some monumental duds (The Happening, The Last Airbender). It’s no secret that in the last few years we’ve gotten more of the latter from Shyamalan, but that might be changing soon. Today, Universal Pictures released the trailer for Shyamalan’s new movie Split, and it’s a heart-stopping couple of minutes.
The trailer stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Haley Lu Richardson (The Bronze), and Jessica Sula (Skins) as a group of girls abducted by a man named Kevin (James McAvoy). As the girls soon discover—and the trailer spells out to us—Kevin is host to 23 separate personalities, some that appear harmless, others that are much more menacing. As the girls try to find their way out, hints are made towards a personality known as “The Beast,” which doesn’t bode well for anyone involved. The trailer is supremely well-acted by all parties, especially McAvoy as he takes on the wide array of personalities inside Kevin.
Check out the trailer for Split below. The footage gives us hope that this will be a tense, affecting return to form for Shyamalan. We’ll have to wait until January 2017 to find out.
