It’s midway through 2016, and we’re still in peak zombie media overdrive. The Walking Dead is a cultural monolith, people are losing their minds over the new Resident Evil 7 demo, and the zombie craze marches on. With so much zombie saturation, it’s difficult to stand out for any new zombie projects. That being said, the new trailer for The Girl With All The Gifts has definitely caught our eye.
Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Mike Carey, The Girl With All The Gifts is set well into the zombie apocalypse, this time at the hands of a fungal infection that brings on the effects. The film follows Melanie (Sennia Nanua), one of a group of children who have been infected by the disease and granted the superhuman strength, agility, and occasional bloodlust of the zombies, but retain their thoughts and humanity. The children are taught by Miss Justineau (Gemma Arterton), with whom Melanie has a particularly strong bond. Things inevitably go sideways, and Melanie quite possibly represents the last hope for the human race.
Besides the expected zombie fighting action one would expect from this type of movie, The Girl With All The Gifts appears like it will really focus on the relationship between Melanie and Miss Justineau. Even in the limited interactions we see in the trailer, Nanua and Arterton seem to have a fantastic connection in their roles, and exploring the more loving side of the end of the world is something that we’re excited to see.
