Ryan Massey has never been content with one sound. The journey the guitarist/vocalist has taken since starting Bay Area quartet American Steel more than 20 years ago is one full of sonic twists and turns, from ska-punk to synth rock (with his other band, Communique), then back to PBR-swilling sing-alongs with American Steel’s recent reunion albums on Fat Wreck Chords. Now, Massey has recruited his fellow American Steel bandmate Scott Healy on drums to complete his new outfit, the Sunset Shipwrecks. The band’s debut album, Community, is as cut-and-dry as rock ’n’ roll gets, with blues influences abounding, and a complete lack of fear toward the guitar solo. Today, we’re debuting the track “Your Love Keeps Me Whole.” Massey comments:
“Rock ’n’ roll lifers need love (and love songs) too. So this is the kind of love song you write for a fiercely independent baddass of a woman who has agreed to take on the world as your (equal) partner in crime. It’s a rocker, and so is the lady the song is for.”
The Sunset Shipwrecks’ Community will be released May 27 via Lugosi Records and can be pre-ordered here.
