Recent Substream cover stars CHVRCHES took Chicago by storm for two sold-out nights at the Riviera Theatre on March 13 and 14. Fans were particularly excited because these dates were not part of a tour but instead were radio shows the band was doing before heading off to SXSW, so these shows were a bit special.

Hailing from Massachusetts, opener Potty Mouth wowed the crowd with their music. I had heard great things about them from the night before, and they definitely didn’t disappoint on Monday. Although I’d never heard of them before, I wished their set was longer as they were really great to listen to.

As the stage went dark at 9:15 signaling the start of CHVRCHES’ set, Iain Cook and Martin Dougherty took their places onstage. As the lights turned back up, frontwoman Lauren Mayberry stood near the back of the stage, starting off the set quietly by singing the lines of “Afterglow” into her mic, backlit by blue panels and a rectangular outline. As “Never Ending Circles” began, the crowd went wild. CHVRCHES played an incredible 17-song set. I was incredibly impressed by them live as I’d only ever heard them on the radio once before. The band’s energy was high, and coupled with the excitement of the fans, it ended up being a great night for many.
